And yes, I'm sorry to see Brennan go but you kind of knew one of them had to. And we got to see both Jay Karnes' Brennan and Tim Matheson's Larry together in one story! Of all the bad guys from Michael's rogue's gallery, they were the two absolute best and it was magical to see them both sucked into Michael's NOC-list storyline. Also they were both, just about, equally good and they both directly dealt with the main arc story. Of course, I could review "Out of the Fire" and "Last Stand" as two separate episodes, but I'm lazy. Oh, and there was that pesky nonsense of us liking the "newer, more caring and emotional" Michael so much that it made us hard to invest in his quest to get his old job back the job that had turned him into a cold, distant douchebag. The villains themselves seemed a bit inter-changeable and the evil black-ops "organization" itself was almost too nebulous to take seriously as a threat. I understand the hoops that people have to jump through in our own government to elicit any kind of change, but we the viewer actually got caught up in the never-ending bureaucracy of this show's own spy-world, where our characters, often times, just wound up chasing their own tales. Tricia Helfer's Carla didn't impress me (although Tricia herself does) and it just seemed like the show was afraid to upset the status-quo too much. Michael just wound up meeting mini-boss after mini-boss, and the show seemed like it was stuck in a holding pattern. Sure, the over-arching story was in place, but it barely, rarely budged. Safe to say, that’s easier said than done in the spy game. After the Season 1 finale though, with Michael driving up into the back of that 16-wheeler, the show slowed down and found its niche as a somewhat repetitive procedural. Mike wants to please everybody while maintaining his own sanity. Eventually he’s going to grow tired of allowing Michael to dictate the terms of their relationship. On the surface, Gilroy appears to be a sophisticated man who can control his emotions. His involvement with Gilroy isn’t going to cease the moral dilemmas. As Michael said, when you’re used to doing bad things for the right reasons, it’s easy to get the lines crossed. That could be a sign he’s headed for more trouble than normal. Hell, he even got duped by Larry’s cellphone trick. His wits and ingenuity keep bailing him out of tight spots, but you gotta think with all the stress he’s under he might slip up if he’s not careful. Now, Mike is still getting his hands pretty damn dirty lately. The ebullient smile on Fiona’s face when Mike credited her for helping him become a better person was priceless.

However, our numero uno spy guy saw the error of his ways before it was too late and even delivered a sincere apology to his buds for allowing the twisted side of his persona to take over. Good ol’ Lar was tap tap tapping away as if Mikey was a keyboard. I’ve always believed Mike is capable of committing heinous acts when his buttons are properly pushed. I thought it was more than appropriate for both Fi and Sam to put their feet down when Mike started behaving like a douche. Shit got really dark between Larry and Michael, which made for an interesting departure from the normal madcap antics.

Larry, the undead spy, was back, played with wackjob gusto by the always entertaining Tim Matheson. I’m sure Vance can’t nail the high notes like Sting, but he does make a convincing psychopath black operative. They could be friggin’ brothers, in my opinion. He looks kinda like Sting, the singer, who is also a fellow Brit. Well, it finally hit me when he and Mikey had their sit-down in the hot tub. It’s been nagging me to no end for the last three weeks because I was unable to identify who the actor who plays Gilroy, Chris Vance, resembled. Where to begin? First I’m gonna start with this Gilroy chap. Anyway, I really dug the latest installment of Miami Spies, and not just because Fi looked smokin’ hot.

Can you guess what they might be? No, I’m not in love with the pattern on Sam’s shirt or that really cool medieval style lamp.

I’ve included it for superficial reasons.

For purposes of full disclosure, I must admit the above photo wasn’t integral to last night’s episode of Burn Notice.
